“A vibrant, profitable and diverse fishing industry providing social and economic benefits to coastal communities, such as Plymouth, with the industry playing a major role in safeguarding the marine environment for future generations.”

OUR VISION

Our vision for a sustain future for Plymouth’s fishing industry and the local fishing communities embraces:

  • An environmentally sustainable and diverse local fishing industry which contributes to the economic and social regeneration of fishing communities.

  • Community based management of the marine environment sensitive to the needs of fishing communities whilst contributing to improving the health of our oceans.

  • Rebalancing of the social and economic inequalities experienced by and within fishing communities, creating a fair distribution of opportunities.

  • Alleviation of the stresses and strains experienced by fishermen and their families caused by regulatory uncertainty, financial vulnerability, the physical risks of the job, lack of connectivity and the difficulties of participating in decision making processes affecting their livelihoods.

  • Better informed marine science and research, with the fishing industry being equal partners.

  • Improved safety at sea with this being firmly embedded within all aspects of policy and regulatory actions.

  • Actively contributing to protecting the marine environment and marine biodiversity, reducing carbon emissions and enabling local fishing communities to adapt to climate change.

  • Strengthening the understanding and connection between the residents of Plymouth and the fishing industry.

  • More locally caught seafood sold locally and available from sustainable fish stocks.

  • Local fishermen and others in the industry having a real say in decisions that matter to them, with the corporate, cultural, public, and voluntary sectors working better together to deliver collective change with fishing communities.
